Brass Caption Head
Mr. Philip Wingfield is currently a full time Graduate Student at the University of Houston, where he is pursuing his M.M. in Music Education. In addition to his Assistantship responsibilities with the Music Education program and the Spirit of Houston Marching Band, Mr. Wingfield is a masterclass and lessons instructor for numerous middle and high school programs in the Houston area.
From 2016-2019, Mr. Wingfield was the assistant band director at West Forsyth High School, where he ran the jazz program and marching band, and assisted with the concert band. Mr. Wingfield graduated with a B.M. in K-12 Instrumental Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2014 (magna cum laude), where he was the recipient of the 2014 Thomas Stone Award for Outstanding Musicianship, the Phi Mu Alpha Scholarship Award, as well as the Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award. While at UNCG Mr. Wingfield was a member of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensemble, as well as a member of the Iota Epsilon chapter of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Music Fraternity. He was also a recipient of the Ethel Virginia Butler Memorial Academic Scholarship and an undergraduate researcher with the Bio-Music department.
Mr. Wingfield has performed professionally as the bass trombonist (and unicyclist) with the Tony and Emmy award winning theatrical production Blast! in two American tours and three international tours in Japan and South Korea in 2011, 2012, and 2014. He aged out from DCI with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps in 2011 where he was the baritone soloist. In addition, Phil was a member of the Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps in 2010, the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps in 2008, and the 2006 and 2007 Memphis Sound Drum and Bugle Corps. Mr. Wingfield was a member of the brass staff for the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps in 2015 and 2016 as the baritone instructor and brass ensemble manager.
Mr. Wingfield was the music caption head for Midas Winds and Stryke Wynds in 2017 and 2015, respectively. Both ensembles won the silver medal at WGI World Championships. Mr. Wingfield has taught numerous marching bands across North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Florida, and has been an active marching band judge.
